但哈贝马斯不同意这种观点。在他看来，这种政治文化，这种“表现在最好的美国传统、表述于美国实用主义之中的激进民主的精神”，并不仅仅是一种为某个民族、某种文化所特有的东西，而是具有超越性的向度和普遍主义的内核的，因而也是可以用哲学理论进行辩护的-哈贝马斯关于交往行动、合理论辩和公共领域的讨论，说到底就是对这样一种普遍主义内核进行发掘、为它进行辩护。关于哈贝马斯与罗蒂等新实用主义者的对话，笔者将在别处进行详细讨论。
回到本文开头引用的普特南的话。普特南出的题目是把新法兰克福学派同詹姆斯和皮尔斯的美国实用主义进行比较，但我们在上面讨论哈贝马斯的时候对詹姆斯一字未提。这并不是出于疏忽；就笔者所知，哈贝马斯本人对詹姆斯也可以说是一字未提。普特南曾经对杜威和詹姆斯进行比较，认为杜威的社会哲学基本上是正确的，但他那强调科学、论辩和合理性的观点如果用到个人之存在方式或生存方式选择的问题上，就不那么令人满意了。相比之下，普特南认为，詹姆斯的观点对回答这种存在主义问题要适合得多。64从前面所讲的杜威和哈贝马斯的社会理论的共同点来看，普特南的上述观点也可以看作是对为什么哈贝马斯对詹姆斯不感兴趣的原因的解释。从这个角度，我们对新法兰克福学派和美国实用主义两者的关系和各自的特点，也可以多一层了解。
